Often described as Hendrix’s second most iconic guitar, the Gibson Flying-V is the electric guitar frequently depicted in some of Jimi’s most famous images and videos. In a similar vein to his renowned Monterey Pop Festival Strat, his ’67 Gibson Flying V also got a similar psychedelic paint job. Originally finished in Sunburst and later finished in a dark brown/ebony by Jimi the V was eventually hand-painted by Hendrix in around mid-1967 with the iconic psychedelic “Love Drop” design. There is some speculation as to whether it was done with hobby paints or nail polish, however, what we do know is that by around 1973 the guitar was lost. Eventually resurfaced in the mid-'90s it was discovered that the guitar had been resprayed entirely in black. Painstakingly faithfully restored by some of the leading experts, the famed 1967 Gibson Flying V “Love Drop” guitar was returned to its former glory.
